Widening Of Busy NW 25th Street Approved By Transportation Planning Organization To Alleviate Traffic In Doral - Miami Airport Warehouses

On Dec. 6, the Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) approved an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2019 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) to include a widening project along NW 25th Street from NW 117th Avenue to NW 87th Avenue.

This project would increase capacity and improve travel times by widening this roadway from five to seven lanes.

In 2016, the TPO completed the Reversible Lanes Along Major Thoroughfares Study, which identified the NW 25th Street corridor from NW 117th Avenue to NW 87th Avenue as a possible candidate for the reversible lanes concept.

A more comprehensive study was later conducted in 2018 by the Miami-Dade Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW), which revealed that the proposed reversible lanes would actually increase travel times in both the westbound and eastbound directions.

Therefore, the widening of NW 25th Street was the preferred alternative as it does not restrict access to adjacent properties and increases vehicular capacity via the additional travel lanes.

“Two years ago, I committed to getting the city a seat on the TPO because I knew that was a crucial step in being able to significantly improve transportation policies affecting our city,” stated Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez.

“The approval of this project reaffirms the importance of working with the members of the board to find solutions that will alleviate traffic in Doral and South Florida as a whole.”

The project, estimated to cost $51,750,000, will be funded by the DTPW and is expected to be completed in 2024.
