PortMiami, a key driver in Miami-Dade County’s economy, has entered a collaboration with Miami Dade College (MDC) aimed at fortifying its workforce, specifically within the realms of trade and logistics
This program is slated to launch in the fall of 2024 and stands as a component of Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s Future Ready Plan. Under this initiative, maritime workers at the port are set to embark on a College Credit Certificate in Logistics and Transportation. The classes, shared with MDC students, plan to cover a wide spectrum of subjects central to supply chain management – from negotiation techniques to project management.
“This partnership with Miami Dade College is a transformative step forward for our community,” Mayor Levine Cava stated, as per a Miami-Dade press release, “offering maritime workers an invaluable opportunity to enhance their skills and advance their careers.”
Furthermore, those enrolled in the program will be eligible for MDC’s Kick-Start Program, which takes care of tuition and fees in full and also provides a $250 stipend for textbooks. The Kick-Start Program, in existence since 2020, is a testament to MDC’s commitment to workforce training in sectors that command a high market demand.
“We recognize the crucial role PortMiami plays in South Florida and look forward to working with Mayor Levine Cava,” said MDC President Madeline Pumariega, to equip Port staff and future students with essential skills to thrive and compete in a global economy, according to Miami-Dade press release.
PortMiami, dubbed the Cruise Capital of the World, substantially impacts the local economy, contributing $61 billion annually and supporting over 340,000 jobs. MDC distinguishes itself as the nation’s most diverse higher education institution, with its massive multilingual student body and multiple campuses offering a vast array of educational programs.
